York's City Auditorium was one of three major W.P.A. projects in the city -- the other two being the
YORK SUBWAY underpass, and the now-demolished Municipal Swimming Pool.
City Auditorium is constructed of reinforced concrete in a vaguely "Art Deco" style. At various times in its history, the local National Guard armory, City offices, Chamber of Commerce, and U.S.O. were located within the building.
At present, most of the building is available to be rented for meetings, auctions, company Christmas parties, wedding receptions, etc. Rental and scheduling is handled by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The York Area Children's Museum occupies a set of rooms on the south side that formerly held City offices. The building is open for indoor walkers, etc. most weekdays unless those parts of the building are in use.
York's 1902 PUBLIC LIBRARY stands immediately north of the City Auditorium. The 1986 KILGORE MEMORIAL LIBRARY and public sculpture "Once Upon A Time" are across 6th Street to the south.
