"Escalon

This railroad town came to life when the San Francisco - San Joaquin Valley Railroad came through in 1895. The line was sold to the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in 1990. John Wheeler Jones, the first settler, came here in 1852. In 1867 he built a brick mansion known then as the mansion of the prairie. His son, James, when assured the railroad was coming through laid out a flat of the town in 1895 naming it Escalon. The original Santa Fe depot was located northwest of this monument, alongside the railroad tracks. Before establishment of an irrigation system, the land here was prairie and grain was the main crop. This monument is dedicated to the memory of the pioneers of Escalon and the surrounding community."
