Long Description:
The Pasterze Glacier, the longest glacier in Austria and in the Eastern Alps reaching from the 3 453 m Johannisberg to 2 100 m above sea level, is approximately 8.4 km long.
The Pasterze Glacier lies within the Hohe Tauern mountain range in Carinthia, directly beneath Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner. The Pasterze can be reached via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and short hike from Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe visitors center. The Pasterze Glacier has been receding since 1856. A combination of higher summer temperatures (global warming) and lower winter snowfall is causing the retreat. The thickness of the glacier currently decreases more than 5 m each year.
