The world famous "Leo Mol Sculpture Garden" attracts over 250,000 visitors a year from around the world, who come to enjoy the works of the sculptor Dr. Leo Mol. It is the only sculpture garden in North American dedicated to the works of a single artist.
Mol himself insisted that sculptures should be publicly displayed, noting that "Statues and busts are meant for public display. Look at the Romans. The Greeks. The Egyptians - their statues were all in the open."
Born Lenoid Molodozhanyn in 1915 in the village of Polonne Ukraine, he learned to work with clay directly from his father. After the German invasion of the Soviet Union, he fled conscription in 1945 and continued his training in Holland. In 1948-49, the artist, now named Mol and his wife immigrated to Canada. Despite growing fame and renown, Leo Mol remained a proud and grateful Manitoban. He refused to move on to centers with greater influences in the fine arts and cultural world.
His subjects have included famous artists, nobles, politicians and even popes. The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., houses Mol’s likeness of former U.S. president Dwight Eisenhower. “He actually made the mold in Eisenhower’s kitchen while Eisenhower helped,” said David Loch, the sculptor’s dealer and longtime friend. In 2002, his sculpture Lumberjacks was featured on a Canadian postage stamp.
In 1989, Mol was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada and in 2000, he was awarded the Order of Manitoba. In 1992, Loch and Hartley Richardson succeeded in opening the Mol sculpture garden and gallery in Assiniboine Park. It is home to more than 300 Mol works.
Artist Leo Mol died on 4 July 2009. He was 94.
