These basalt cliffs are in the form of an S-curve. The formation is just a little off the Brown Canyon Trail and can best be viewed from the ledge across the creek from them.
The basalt was laid down in layers which were originally horizontal. The probable source for the eruptions were the Canello Hills to the the west. After they had been laid down, tectonic pressures contributed to the bending and folding which formed this S-curve in the rocks.
To get to the site, park at the Brown Canyon Ranch and take the hiking trails which lead up the canyon. After about two miles on this trail, there is a cement cistern next to the creek. At this point, follow the creek up to the falls and the rock formation. Some scrambling is involved.
