Eugene Asa Carr was born in Hamburg, New York on March 20, 1830.He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1850, 19th in a class of 44. After graduation her served in the 1st U. S. Cavalry and saw action in the Indian Wars until 1861. During the Civil War he saw action at Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge and Elkhorn Tavern. During action at Elkhorn Tavern, Carr was wounded in the neck, arm and ankle but continued to lead his troops. His actions delayed General Price against 3 to 1 odds for six hours to allow time for General Curtis to shift men to this part of the battlefield. As a result of his action he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was promoted to brigadier general on March 7, 1862 and saw action in Tennessee and Missouri. During the Vicksburg Campaign he attacked Confederate troops at the battle of Port Gibson and later fought in the battles of Champion’s Hill and Vicksburg. After the Civil War conducted several operations on the western frontier against the Indians. He retired from military service in 1893 with the rank of brigadier general. General Carr died in Washington, D. C. on December 2, 1910 and is resting in the United States Military Academy Post Cemetery at West Point, New York.

General Carr’s Medal of Honor Citation reads:

”Directed the deployment of his command and held his ground, under a brisk fire of shot and shell in which he was several times wounded.”
