For more than one hundred years an observatory has stood at Žalov Hill in Ondrejov. One of the leading research establishments in its branch in Europe, the observatory has been actively engaged in observing the Sun and other stars as well as interplanetary matter and high-energy cosmic objects. The observatory complex, conceived as an arboretum, is open to the general public. The observatory forms the principal establishment of the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic that has been involved in researching galaxies, black holes and the movement of celestial bodies in the solar system. In the historical cupola you can inspect a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the observatory and a massive collection of interesting instruments, including Clark's telescope, 150 years old, which continues to be used for observing the sky.
