Oliver Perry Morton
January 16, 1861-January 23, 1867
Governor Morton was the first governor to be born in the state. Most importantly, he was the Governor during the American Civil War. Historian James Ford Rhodes penned him, "The ablest and most energetic of the war governors of the Western States." He was aflicted by a stroke in 1865, when he was forced to walk with a cane. In 1867, he was elected to the United States Senate. There he was known as a Radical Republican, where he served until his death in 1877.
