RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1978 (JRS) THE STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARKS USLS AND 1, AND AZIMUTH MARK WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK 3 WAS ESTABLISHED AT THIS DATE. ADEQUATE CHECKS WERE MADE IN DISTANCE AND DIRECTION TO THE REFERENCE MARKS. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS NOT VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND. A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS ABOUT 4 MILES EAST OF THE VILLAGE OF MIDDLEVILLE, 1/2 MILE EAST OF THE GEAUGA-TRUMBULL COUNTY LINE, AND IN SECTION 57. PERMISSION TO USE THE STATION WAS GIVEN BY MR. JERRY GOLDBERG, 8398 BUNDYSBURG ROAD, MIDDLEFIELD, OHIO 44062 TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 608 AND 87 IN MIDDLEFIELD, GO EAST ON STATE HIGHWAY 87 FOR 3.65 MILES TO A GRAVELED CROSSROAD (BUNDYSBURG ROAD) AT THE TRUMBULL COUNTY LINE. TURN RIGHT AND GO SOUTH ON BUNDYSBURG ROAD FOR 0.6 MILE TO A GRAVELED DRIVEWAY ON THE LEFT AND SIGN, LONE STAR FARM. TURN ON DRIVEWAY AND GO EAST FOR 0.1 MILE TO A METAL GATE AT THE SOUTHEAST END OF A BARN. PASS THROUGH GATE AND CONTINUE EAST ACROSS PASTURE FOR 0.2 MILE TO A METAL GATE IN AN EAST-WEST FENCELINE. CONTINUE ABOUT ANOTHER 100 FEET, THEN TURN NORTHERLY FOR ABOUT 300 FEET TO THE STATION. STATION MARK, STAMPED---MESOPOTAMIA 1928---, IS A U.S. LAKE SURVEY DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 6-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 6 IHCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS 58.5 FEET SOUTH OF A 30-INCH HICKORY TREE, 51 FEET NORTHEAST OF ANOTHER HICKORY ABOUT 30 INCHES IN DIAMETER. REFERENCE MARK 1, STAMPED---MESOPOTAMIA NO 1 1928---, IS A U.S. LAKE SURVEY DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH ROUND CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 6 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS 18.5 FEET WEST OF AN 18-INCH WALNUT TREE AND 1 FOOT NORTH OF AN EAST-WEST FENCELINE. REFERENCE MARK 3, STAMPED---MESOPOTAMIA 1877 NO 3 1978---, IS A STANDARD NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH ROUND CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 3 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS 53 FEET WEST OF A FENCE LINE AND 9 FEET NORTHEAST OF A 16-INCH TWIN TRUNKED HICKORY TREE. REFERENCE MARK USLS, IS A 5 BY 5-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 6 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS IN THE EAST-WEST FENCELINE. AZIMUTH MARK, STAMPED---MESOPOTAMIA 1951---, IS A STANDARD COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 6 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS 1 FOOT SOUTH OF THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF A BARN. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM BUNDYSBURY ROAD AND THE DRIVEWAY GO EAST ON DRIVEWAY FOR ABOUT 0.5 MILE TO THE FIRST BARN ON THE RIGHT AND THE AZIMUTH MARK, AS DESCRIBED.

From the center of the village of Mesopotamia at the junction of State Highways 87 and 534, go west on State Highway 87 for 2.4 miles to a crossroad at the county line. Turn left and go south on Bundysburg Road for about 0.6 mile to the south driveway to house number 8398 on the left. Turn left into driveway and go east for about 0.05 mile to a large barn on the right and the azimuth mark 17 feet west of the southeast corner of the barn. The mark is 0.2 foot below the surface of the ground.
