This is a great trail if you want to spend a couple hours (or more) in the solitude of the forest, but it's not for the faint of heart. If you're unfamiliar with the geography of this area, you'll find out soon that the Jefferson Memorial Forest is in the hilly area of Jefferson County, Kentucky. There are numerous uphill ascents on this trail (and almost as many descents!). The trail guide lists the trail as "strenuous", which is probably accurate for most people. It'll definitely give you a good workout.
Much of the forest sustained heavy damage in the massive ice storm of January 2009. There is a lot of timber down, but only rarely do you have to hike around or climb over. The trail brings you along many ridge lines and summits, but also through many low-lying valleys and across a few small creek beds. Generally speaking the trail is well-marked with yellow blazes. In some areas it runs along with the "Blue" trail (a shorter route for those not up to the full 5.4 miles) and with a horse trail.
This is not a trail for tennis shoes - bring your hiking boots. I'd also recommend a good snack or two, plus plenty of water, especially if you'll be hiking this trail during the warm months or afternoon hours. Bug spray is also a must.
The trail is located in the Paul Yost section of the Forest. The gate to this section of the Forest opens at 8:00 am and closes at dusk. The trail guide suggests 160 minutes to complete the loop, so make sure you leave plenty of time to complete it before the gates close.
The trailhead is accessible just past the playground on Jones Hollow Road. Parking is available at the trailhead.
