An engraved memorial and 4 simple stone markers lie side by side in a small square plot bordered by stones at the back of the Confederate Cemetery. The larger marker reads: John Tobias Brauer 1856 - 1922. One assumes the 4 smaller markers were offspring. Lois is the third stone with the simple inscription:
LOIS BRAUER
AUG. 15, 1887
FEB. 13, 1993
Lois died before her 106th birthday.
Research revealed few details about the Brauers, although the entries
- Brauer, Jno T, (Louisa), groceries 425 Commerce, h 917 Hanover
- Brauer, Lois Miss, h 917 Hanover
are found in a
1910-11 Fredericksburg city directory and
- Brauer, John T (Louise), merchant, 917 Hanover
- Brauer, Lois, milliner, 917 Hanover
are found in a
1921 city directory.
Although it is not confirmed that these are the same Brauers, some of the other Brauers listed in the directory at the same address of 917 Hanover are found on the other stones.
It appears Dad may have been a merchant. When Lois was born, the price of bread was 2¢/loaf, milk was 17¢/gallon, a house was $5600, and the median income was $580/year. The year Lois died bread was 75¢/loaf, milk was $2.27/gallon, a house was $147,700, and median income was $47,221/year.
You can visit Lois and her family at the Confederate Cemetery at 1100 Washington Avenue in old town Fredericksburg. The cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk.
