Established in 1885, this historic cemetery is the final resting place of one of New Jersey's most famous residents, Walt Whitman. This was one of the first rural cemeteries built in the country and definitely one of the oldest in New Jersey.

The cemetery is across the street from Our lady of Lourdes Hospital and shares a border with Collingswood. Out front there is a really neat limestone relief of the cemetery's name atop the left entrance pillar. The entrance is quite beautiful. Surrounded by a wrought iron gate, this cemetery, according to the office manager I spoke with has approximately 45,000 graves. This place is HUGE.
This cemetery rivals Laurel Hill Cemetery, a short drive over the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Both have many huge obelisks, endless mausoleums and thousands of interments. Laurel Hill has about 1000% more famous Americans buried there and is a NRHP site. This cemetery is a N.J. Historic Place site. Harleigh cemetery is over 130 acres and is close to the Cooper River.
