Born 19 May, 1882 Chief Clinton Rickard, of the Beaver Clan, was one of the most important chiefs of the Tuscarora Nation. While the Tuscaroras were considered the least important of the 6 tribes of the Six Nations Confederacy, Chief Rickard rose to greatness.
Chief Rickard was the founder, on 1 December 1926, of the Indian Defense League. The IDLA was founded to defend Indian rights, specifically the unrestricted passage throughout all of North America that is considered an inherent right of indigenous peoples. Among the accomplishments of the IDLA has been forcing the US government to recognize the Jay Treaty of 1794, the Treaty of Ghent of 1814 and forcing civil liberties of Indians to be upheld.
Chief Rickard died 14 June 1971.
