The Charlotte Museum of History offers Charlotte’s history over three centuries
through a rich diversity of learning experiences. Originally founded to preserve the
1774 Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, the museum today offers living history
programs at the historic site as well as exhibits and events at our spacious new
museum building on a ten-acre campus.

About the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite
Hezekiah Alexander was a colonial settler who became one of Charlotte’s foremost
patriots during the American Revolution. His distinctive two-story stone house,
known as the Rock House, stands as Charlotte’s oldest surviving building and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the original restored
house with period furnishings, additional buildings and features at the Homesite include
a reconstructed spring house, a reproduction log cabin kitchen, a reproduction
barn, and a colonial herb garden. Living history tours by costumed interpreters are
offered daily and provide an interactive, in-depth experience of the Homesite.

About the Charlotte Museum of History Exhibits and Collections
The spacious new museum building on the Homesite campus offers an exciting
setting for innovative and educational exhibits about the region’s past. Familyfriendly
displays include an architectural model of the colonial village that became
Charlotte, and chronicle three hundred years of Charlotte’s history. The museum
grounds are graced by the American Freedom Bell, the largest cast bell in the world
viewed at eye level.

About Community Events at the Museum and Homesite
The Charlotte Museum of History receives over 50,000 visitors each year. In addition
to daily living history tours and tours for school groups, the museum offers community
events and historic reenactments, presents an annual Distinguished Speaker Series
and Women Making History Series, and partners with many local organizations
for events and programs. The museum hosts meetings for numerous community
groups, and is a popular venue for family reunions, weddings, and parties.
