The Hollywood sign began as advertising for a development in the Hollywood hills called "Hollywoodland" and that is what the sign read from 1923 until repairs were made in 1949 when the sign was taken over by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the last four letters removed. Over the next decades the sign again fell into disrepair with letters being damage and one of the O's falling over. In 1978 a public campaign raised money to replace the sign. Several celebrities donated to replace individual letters, including Gene Autry, Hugh Hefner, and Alice Cooper.
The letters are not accessible to the public but there are several excellent locations for viewing the sign from below. Hikers may go up the paved road to the the radio towers on the top of Mt. Lee and get an unusual perspective from above and behind the sign.
