Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, a Burlington physician, gained national fame in 1903 when he drove a two-cylinder Winton from San Francisco to New York on a $50 wager.
The trip took 65 days (the wager was over whether it could be done in 90 days). The full story is told in the Ken Burns film Horatio's Drive.
Having given up practicing medicine due to poor health, Jackson became a successful businessman upon returning to Burlington: bank president, newspaper publisher, and owner of the first radio station in town.
Despite his age he was permitted to join the army in WWI, earning the Distinguished Service Cross, and was one of the founders of the American Legion.
He was the son-in-law of General William Wells and is buried in the Wells family plot in Burlington's Lakeview Cemetery.
Note: Nelson never collected on the $50 wager (over $1,200 in 2009 dollars).
