Located in Beaver County in south-western Pennsylvania, the residents of Aliquippa have been mostly of working class, and lower middle class. The steel mills on the banks of the Ohio River have traditionally provided well-paying jobs, and the city and its residents benefited in many decades.
Recently, the city has experienced economic distress.
The memorial is composed of a single statue depicting a soldier in World War I, with a backdrop of several vertical plaques, each memorializing one of the many wars americans have fought in, with each plaque positioned in a semi-circular line.
