The battlefield is one of the last armed efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their way of life. Here in 1876, 263 soldiers and attached personnel of the U.S. Army, including Lt. Col. George A. Custer, met death at the hands of several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne warriors.
The battle field has markers where each soldier or Indian fell in battle. On the top of "Last Stand Hill" there is a monument where about 220 soldiers, scouts and civilians are buried.
One of the newest additions to the grounds is the Spirit Warriors sculpture which is part of the Indian memorial.
The Custer National Cemetery is located adjacent to the entrance to the Battlefield entrance and visitors center. This national cemetery is the final resting place for more than 4,900 veterans from Indian Wars through Vietnam.
