John Lawson
Surveyor General Of North Carolina
(1708-1711)
In 1701 John Lawson (1674-1711), who became Surveyor General of Carolina, traveled along Sugaw Creek after entering North Carolina near Pineville from South Carolina. He came through eastern Mecklenburg County, staying three or four days and spending one day hunting pigeons, which were numerous. His exploratory voyage of more than 500 miles began at Charles Town, SC on December 28, 1700, and ended at Washington, NC, on February 24, 1701. His description of the state in his book, A New Voyage to Carolina, published in 1709, is the most comprehensive for that time period.
