[FR] Les Rèmes - latin Remi - étaient un peuple gaulois. Leur nom signifie « les premiers ». Selon Jules César, à son arrivée en Gaule, si « les Éduens avaient de loin le premier rang, les Rèmes occupaient le second ».
Avant l'arrivée des Romains, les Rèmes étaient fortement liés aux Suessions ayant, selon César « les mêmes lois, le même chef de guerre, (le) même magistrat ». Ce peuple lui sera soumis par César. Les Carnutes auraient été leurs clients.
Alliés aux Ambiens, aux Bellovaques et aux Atrébates, ils s’allient rapidement à Jules César lors de la guerre des Gaules, fidèles alliés, ils ne trahiront jamais leurs engagements.
Jules César, dans ses Commentaires sur la Guerre des Gaules, dit d'eux « Gallorum omnium fortissimi Belgii », et Strabon ajoute « Inter istas gentes Remi sunt nobilissimi », ce qu'on peut traduire par De tous les Gaulois, les Belges sont les plus braves, et parmi eux les Rèmes sont les plus illustres.
[EN] The Remi were a Belgic tribe of north-eastern Gaul in the 1st century BC. They occupied the northern Champagne plain, on the southern fringes of the Forest of Ardennes, between the rivers Mosa (Meuse) and Matrona (Marne), and along the river valleys of the Aisne and its tributaries the Aire and the Vesle.
They were surrounded on all sides by friendly Belgic states, and their tribal capital was at Durocortum (Reims, France) the second largest "oppidum" of Gaul, on the Vesle. Allied with the Germanic tribes of the east, they repeatedly engaged in warfare against the Parisii and the Senones. They were renowned for their horses and cavalry. The Remi, under Iccius and Andecombogius, allied themselves with Julius Caesar and remained loyal to him throughout the entire Gallic Wars, the most pro-Roman of all the peoples of Gaul.
