Mt Dromedary. Trig point 797m
Mt Dromedary or Gulaga to the Yuin, the traditional landowners of nearby Wallaga Lake area.
The trig point is on a wooden post mounted in a large rock cairn. It was supposedly created all the way back in 1897. So it’s well over 100 years old. A heritage trig point even. Look for the little plaque mounted on the wooden post.
To explore Gulaga it is worth devoting at least half a day. A walking track from Pam’s Store at Tilba Tilba to the summit and back (11km round trip) is actually not as difficult as it might look - and the rainforest, wildlife, granite outcrops and views are definitely worth the effort.
On a weird side note the presence of gold in the Mount Dromedary area was first noted in 1852 by the Rev. W.B. Clarke (1860), who found alluvial gold along Dignams Creek. Subsequently, alluvial gold was located in many of the streams that drain the northern and southern slopes of Mount Dromedary. Supposedly all the available gold has been extracted. So don’t bother taking your gold mining gear.
