Created by Charles Morgan, an Englishman who living in Switzerland, the Swiss Jolly Ball is actually kind of pinball machine, also known as a "flipper machine." It stands 7 feet high, 15 feet wide and 5 feet deep. As such, it was listed in the 1988 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest flipper machine in the world.
The metal ball is sent through every part of classic Switzerland you can imagine from tunnels to ski lifts, from a Swiss chalet to the banks. There is even a funicular!
The interpretive sign reads:
TAKE A TOUR THROUGH SWITZERLAND
Ride the rails with the roving little Jollyball and see the sites of Switzerland! Created as a travel advertisement for the Swiss National Tourist Office, the Jollyball takes you to all of the country's sight-seeing "hot spots."
HOW IT WORKS!
The Jollyball is actually a giant pinball machine. In fact, it won a place in the 1988 Guinness Book of World Records for the largest "flipper machine ever built!" Charles Morgan, a British jeweler and inventor living in Switzerland, created it from scraps he salvaged from junkyards.
