Long Description:
The Pope Estate is the oldest and the largest estate in the Tallac Historic Site. From a sign at the estate - THE MAIN HOUSE OF THE TEVIS/POPE ESTATE WAS BUILT IN 1894 BY GEORGE P. TALLANT, SON OF DRURY TALLANT, FOUNDER OF ONE OF CALIFORNIA'S OLDEST BANKING INSTITUTIONS, THE CROCKER BANK. FIVE YEARS LATER THE PROPERTY PASSED TO THE LLOYD TEVIS FAMILY OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. TEVIS, FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF WELLS FARGO, CO., BUILT MOST OF THE STRUCTURES YOU SEE TODAY AND SURROUNDED THE HOUSE WITH ROCK GARDENS, FOUNTAINED PONDS, AND RUSTIC BRIDGES.
IN THE EARLY 1920'S, THE ESTATE WAS SOLD TO THE GEORGE A. POPE FAMILY AND BECAME KNOWN AS THE "VATICAN LODGE." POPE RESOURCES, ORIGINALLY POPE AND TALBOT, CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE NATION'S MOST SUCCESSFUL LUMBER AND SHIPPING BUSINESSES. THE FAMILY TRANSFERRED THE LAND AND BUILDINGS TO THE USDA FOREST SERVICE.
Today, the Pope Estate serves as the interpretive center for the historic site. There are tours, living history and children's programs. The buildings are closed during the winter but the grounds are available for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
