As a kid, I used to watch Emergency and dream of being a firefighter and do all the cool things that Roy De Soto and Johnny Gage got up to on Squad 51. In 1980 I became a volunteer firefighter and a career firefighter in 1985.
I think if you ask any firefighter, they would probably tell you that Emergency was also a favourite of theirs. You can now buy the TV Series on DVD now as well.
Of course Station 51 is fictictious or is it? Station 127 of Los Angeles County Fire Department in the City of Carson was the station that was used for the outside shots. In fact they spent 6 months at this station to get the shots they needed and the rest was done in a sound stage.
This station has neve had a Squad - Station 36 up the road is a Squad Station.
If you go to Universal Studios and take the backlot tour you will see the current Station 51 which looks after the Universal Studio area.
If you are lucky, the guys will be at the Station and they will be happy to show you around. They get a lot of visitors from around the world. They will also sell you a T-shirt, patch and other memorabilia.
