A pair of bench seats with traditional Maori carvings, in a small park beside the sacred Pohaturoa Rock in the heart of Whakatane, are presented by the family of two early pioneers.

These two seats are both adorned with Maori carvings and each one contains a plaque, "Presented by the family of Albert (Te Tawhero) and Adeline Stewart, Pioneers."
The two bench seats stand in a restful spot beside a very sacred Maori site at Pohaturoa Rock, sacred to the Ngati Awa people. On this steep-sided sacred rock in the center of the town is a tapu cave in which the Maoris used to hold their ceremonies. Since 1927 it has been a memorial to the dead of the first world war.
