George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army here in 1775. This bronze was sculpted in 1910, (after Philadelphia schoolchildren donated their pennies toward the cost) and was modeled after the 1869 marble statue by Joseph A. Bailey - which previously stood here:
