The flag is split into 6 horizontal areas; 3 yellow ones and 3 red ones with 3 yellow stars each.
The flag is based on the flag of the Earl of Rheinfelden in the 10th century, this flag had no stars. The stars represent the virtues of the inhabitants.
In the early days it was unclear, which color was on top, there had been different versions. 1952 the town authorities declared that red was on top, but they changed their minds in 1985. Now the flag starts with a yellow strip, while the flag of Rheinfelden county still has red on top.
