This is said to be the only known small, private, water-powered mill still surviving in North Carolina. It has been owned by the same family for 100 years.

The current owner divides his time between his homes in North Carolina and in Florida. He posts an advance schedule of when he will be holding demonstrations. At other times, there is a chain across the driveway. However, you can park between the road and the chain and walk around the mill site. To view the current year's schedule, visit this site:

At the site. Existing grist mill, warehouse building (using sawdust for insulation), dam and water race, the former site of a Baptist Church, and the original mill site from 1867.

Nearby, along Cane Creek Road, are two easy-to-find benchmarks (AI4378, AI4379) which can be logged on www.geocaching.com/mark.

Directions: From the old Courthouse in Bakersville, take Mitchell Avenue east. It becomes Cane Creek Road, winding through a beautiful valley. The mill is exactly 4 miles from the Courthouse, on the right side of the road.
