The deadhouse is an unique structure to York Region in Ontario. Several cemeteries have an octagonal-shaped deadhouse. The idea was to give the grave-keepers a place to store the deceased through the winter months, when the ground was too frozen to permit burial.
Today, the deadhouses are used for storage of cemetery equipment.
