This graceful Japanese stone lantern, made of granite, was a gift from Huntington Beach's sister city of Anjo, Japan, in 1985. It is placed at the top of the tiered fountain in front of the Civic Center and Police station. There is a bench nearby to enjoy the view and the fountain (as of this posting, however, the fountain is empty, possibly because the Civic Center is undergoing seismic renovations, or an ongoing drought/energy crunch).
Huntington Beach's sister city program has been operating since 1977; each summer there is an cultural exchange program of four students and their chaperone between the two cities. Unfortunately, in 2009, Anjo declined to host or send students because of swine flu fears. Hopefully, the program will be resumed next year.

If you've visited or are from Anjo, I'd be very interested in hearing about whatever gifts Huntington Beach has given that city in exchange.
