A Forest Service fire lookout tower along the Mogollon Rim in the Tonto National Forest, east of Payson Arizona, and on top of Colcord Mountain.
The tower is 83 feet tall, and was built in 1960 (info from firelookout.org). The elevation at the base of the tower is 7516 feet. The tower is in active use.
Directions: From Payson, follow road 260 east up onto the Rim. Turn right on Young Road, FR 512, and follow south for 3 miles to the intersection with Colcord Road (FR 291). Turn right and follow 2 miles until the road goes both straight and right. Follow right for another half mile to the tower. Parking is available next to the tower.
The tower is open to the public to climb. The sign at the bottom of the tower says it is open 9am - 5pm and closed during lightning storms. Four people are allowed at the top at a time. I could not find information on what months the tower is open during (summer is your best bet). There is no fee to climb.
It's a beautiful view from the top.
