Cherokee is one of 18 parks in the Louisville area designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Opened in 1892, it is one of the largest parks in the area, at 409 acres, and most popular, at 500,000 visitors per year.
The land is largely heavily wooded, but with open areas for golf, soccer, rugby, and frisbee. Beargrass Creek run through the center of the park. One highlight is the 2.43 mile long Scenic Loop road that has one lane for cars and one lane for bikes and pedestrians. There are also numerous trails for hiking, biking, and horse riding.
