From a station on this site the night of April 21, 1900, John Luther "Casey" Jones, replacing the regularly detailed engineer Sam Tate who called in sick, took out Engine No. 382, pulling the Illinois Central "Cannonball" (the term applied to fast mail and fast passenger trains of those days). Rushing to make up time and arrive on schedule, Jones was unable to stop "Ole 382" from crashing into a freight train that had blocked the tracks in Vaughan, Mississippi early the following morning. Because Jones stayed on board to slow the train, he doubtless saved the passengers from serious injury and death (Jones himself was the only fatality of the collision).
