A plaque adjacent to the mural reads as follows:
This three-dimensional mural composed of 380 individual enameled copper tiles commemorates the landing of Juan Ponce de Leon in Melbourne Beach in 1513. As a component of the 2005 Brevard County Parks and Recreation Summer Camps, students from Port St. John Community Center and Rockledge High School camps, along with fourth through sixth graders from the Spessard Holland Elementary School camp, painted these tiles during an arts program coordinated by the Brevard Cultural Alliance.
This mural was conceptualized and directed by painter and engineer Sigi Oberlaender and enamellist Sean Alton, both Brevard County artists. Obenlaender and Alton designed this mural and instructed the youth teams in the execution of the project. Special thanks to Tilden, Lobnitz & Cooper, Inc., for engineering services.
This mural was unveiled on July 21, 2005, by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department and the Brevard Cultural Alliance.
