Nearby 'Sommeltjesberg' in a nowadays leveled grave mound that was supposed to be the living place of the 'Sommeltjes', according to an ancient legend. In the Texel folk tales the are a kind of gnome-like goblins who only live at night and change to stones in the daylight. Because of the tourists the Texel people like to keep the legend alive. Close to the church of De Waal you can see a contemporary sculpture of two of these 'Sommeltjes'.
