From the town website (secondary link below), we learn that Jonesborough was founded in 1779. It was temporarily the capital of the State of Franklin until moved to nearby Greeneville. Franklin functioned as the nation’s 14th state until 1788, but was never recognized by Congress. Jonesborough had a preservation movement in the 1970’s which saved many older buildings. It was the first town in Tennessee to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
