This stone was set to mark the centennial of the founding of Shippensburg University - for a short history see (visit link)

The stone includes an indicator of true north, the coordinates of N 40° 3' 32" W 77° 31' 20", elevation of 688 feet, and "Centennial Year 1970-71".

The marked coordinates actually are about 190 feet to the west of the stone's location, although the elevation appears (from a USGS topo map) to be correct. If longitude were reduced by 2 seconds, the DD.MM.SS coordinates would be just about spot on.

This stone can easily be found while walking on campus - it is N of Old Main, and between Huber Arts Center to the NW & Shearer Hall to the SE.
Type of structure: Other

Difference between the post coordinates and your GPSr reading:
190 feet

Reason for the coordinates: Placed in celebration of University's Centennial Year
