Master Hsing Yun, the 48th Patriarch of the Lin-chi (Japanese Rinzai ) line of Ch'an, is the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order and its international headquarters in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Master Hsing Yun was born in Jiangdu, Jiangsu Province, China in 1927. Tonsured at the age of 12 by Master Zhi Kai in Nanjing, he was a student at Quingsan, Jiaoshan, Chi-hsia, Tianlin and Baohua traditional monasteries. He was fully ordained in 1941 and went on to formal monastic training at Ch'I-hsia Vinaya School and Chiao-shan Buddhist College. In 1949, as Mainland China was enmeshed in civil war, he left his homeland for Taiwan.

Master Hsing Yun founded the Fo Guan Shan Monastery in 1967, the goal of which is to promote Humanistic Buddhism. Within 35 years over two hundred branch temples have been established in major cities around the world. His achievements have been widely recognized around the world - He has received a number of awards and met with Pope John Paul II and the Dalai Lama on several occasions.
