Humboldt was named in honor of a German naturalist named Alexander von Humboldt. The first business of the city was a store established in the 1850’s by John C. Gillespie. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad first reached the area in 1859. The city was incorporated in 1866. The West Tennessee Strawberry Festival, which is one of the major attractions in the area, started in 1934.
