Originally established as a land grant to Samuel Appleton in 1638,
Appleton Farms is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in the United States. It was owned and operated by nine generations of Appletons until 1998, when it was transferred to the current owner,
The Trustees of Reservations.
Located on the Farms at the center of an oak grove on a knoll southwest of the
New House site, this serene spot has wonderful views of adjacent areas of the Farms, and was one of Mrs Appleton's favorite spots. Built from locally collected field stones, the semi-circular wall focuses on a large millstone, a favorite of Mrs Appleton. The visitor is invited to stop, rest, and contemplate the beauty of the surroundings.
The inscription reads:
In joyful memory
JOAN EGLESTON APPLETON
1912 - 2006
Mrs Appleton lived on the farm many years, and took an active part in its management and operation. She lived in the
Old House until the early 1990s, when she moved to a smaller home on the western part of the Farm. She was the last Appleton to live on the Farm.
This memorial can be reached by well maintained trails from either of the two visitor parking areas: one on
Highland Street just north of the Cutler Road intersection, and one at
the corner of Waldingfield Road and Route 1A. Be sure to get a trail map, either from the web sites above, or at the parking area. There are many more waymarks on the Farms property. See the "Nearest Waymarks" link near the bottom of this page. There are also at least four geocaches. Enjoy the Farms. Its a great place to visit.
