The Church of St. Michael, founded in 1849, is one of the oldest parishes in Minnesota. The first services held by missionary priest were conducted in private homes. The parish was originally a community of mostly Irish immigrants in the lumbering town.
The cornerstone of the current church building was laid in 1873. The stone church was dedicated August 15, 1875 by Bishop Thomas L. Grace. The building was renovated in 1991 and in 1997 the exterior the the church was restored.
