Most folks will probably not look at the top of the monument - except for those who are pursuing this waymark. The bronze compass rose indicates the 16 cardinal directions.
The monument is to commemorate John Carter, who was a pioneering merchant in this area, which is named Carter's Valley.
This compass rose is also Benchmark GA0771. Per the 1964 recovery, "THE ELEVATION DETERMINED IS THE SURFACE OF THE BRONZE ORIENTATION PLATE AT THE SMALL INDENTATION THAT MARKS THE EXACT LOCATION OF TRIANGULATION STATION HAWKINS COUNTY MILESTONE WHICH IS THE CENTER OF THE PLATE AND THE 2-FOOT SQUARE GRANITE POST."
