As an extension of the street Via di Sant'Onofrio, these steps are made of clay brick, the same material used by the ancient romans in building the Colosseum.

The street connects the residential streets along the river Tiber with the upper streets on the Janiculum Hill.

The name derives from the church of Sant'Onofrio, located on top of the hill on top of the steps.
