The J. Edgar Hoover Building was named for the former first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He started the Bureau in 1935 and led it until his death in 1972. Much of the achievements of the FBI came at his hands. Due his checkered past, the head of the FBI is now limited to only ten years.
During his tenure, J. Edgar Hoover brought to justice several famous criminals or cases. Big named criminals like John Dillinger, Alan Karpis and “Machine Gun” Kelly were caught. He also revolutionized the field of crime solving with achievements such as creation of the Centralized fingerprint registry and the FBI Laboratory, dedicated to analyzing their evidence.
Upon his death, congress voted to let his body lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda, an honor that has been afforded few Americans.
