The M-48 Medium Tank was built by Ford Motor Company and introduced in 1953 as part of a "family" of tank designs. The elliptical hull and turret provided greater armor protection over previous US tank models, while the 90mm main gun increased the offensive power. This static display is located just inside the southern fence of Ft. Sam Houston near the Quadrangle. It can be seen from Grayson Street without having to go onto the post. There is a nearby visitor gate that allows for foot traffic only. The visitor's gate is open from 6 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday except for holidays. Civilian visitors will need to show ID in order to get through the check point.
