Citation:

Gallant manner in which he faced a desperate Indian.

After serving with bravery and distinction during the two-day Red River, Texas engagement of September 26 - 28, 1874, Farrier Ernest Veuve earned the Medal of Honor in the November 3 engagement at Staked Plains, Texas. On that date Farrier Veuve along with Private John Comfort and civilian guide Henry Strong were in advance of their cavalry force in search of a suitable campsite for the detachment. Upon seeing a trail with hoof prints indicating a large Indian force, Private Comfort returned to the main body to warn them while Veuve and Strong continued on alone. Nearing an Indian encampment the two men encountered three Indians, one of which they killed and the other two which they pursued, Veuve on foot with Strong riding after the other. The warrior Farrier Veuve drew a pistol as Henry Strong rode past him, prepared to fire on the civilian scout. Farrier Veuve reached the warrior before he could fire, knocked him to the ground, and wrestled with him until he killed the enemy with his pistol. His actions saved the life of Henry Strong. Two days later Private Comfort, who had returned to warn the main column, earned the Medal of Honor in the same location for a separate action. (visit link)
