The Ocean County Observer was founded in 1850. It operated independently until being sold to Gannett Company in 1998. The newspaper was published six days per week Sunday through Friday with a posted daily circulation of almost 15,000. On January 10, 2008 the paper switched from a daily operation to a weekly operation called the Toms River Observer-Reporter. Daily news for Toms River is now covered through a local bureau for the Asbury Park Press.
