There was a write up in the February 2009 New York State Conservationist about this marker being placed in Mt. Morris, the following history of John Powell was obtained from the magazine:
Best known for being the first explorer to navigate the length of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. He was born in Mount Morris on September 23, 1834 and was a soldier, explorer, author, teacher and scientist. He was Director of the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution and for a time, served as director of the United States Geological Survey.
Powell lived on both sides of nearby Letchworth Gorge, known as the Grand Canyon of the East. He died in 1902 at age 68.
