Long Description:The Rockport area is state land and is open to the public. The area
is in the process of changing management from Forest Mineral and
Fire Management Division to Parks Division of the Michigan
Department of Natural Resources. This change may make the sinkholes
more accessible. The area contains over a dozen sinkholes several
contain water, the largest is over 40 feet deep. The trail into the
largest sinkhole is adjacent to many of the larger sinks. This
group is in a line from the Shoe Pack sinkholes 30 to 40 miles to
the west to the sinks submerged in Lake Huron. The Michigan Karst
Conservancy has purchased tracts of land that have some real nice
sinks, this group is involved in protecting these gems. In the past
some of these sinkholes were turned into land fills contaminating
the soil and water associated with these sinks.
Getting to this group of sinkholes will require walking over one
mile on an unmarked trails. Travel along the east side of the old
quarry at the north end a trail will run parallel to the quarry
eventually this trail will come out to a power line turn right go
about 200 yards and take the trail to the left into the woods. This
trail is narrow and will take you along several sinks, one more
turn, to the right will take you to the largest sinkhole. These
directions and a GPS should get you to the right location.
