Featuring the most grueling race in the world, Alaska is the starting for the Iditarod. Driving husky dogs across the tundra versus driving a truck across the countryside, both can be rewarding and challenging!

The official website of the Iditerod has much history and hosts videos. A great source of information.
People from numerous countries and vocations attempt this race every year. Some to compete with others, some with nature and some with themselves. The route of the race crosses some of the most extreme terrain all with a frozen aspect. Rivers and mountain passes, forests and unbelievable snow, all with vicious winds stand between the team of 12 to 16 dogs, their musher and victory! See the Learn about the Ideterod page to read more including details of the route.
From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days.

An abridged version outlining the race, some history and interesting factoids can also be reviewed at the Wikipedia page for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Most of us will never experience anything remotely close to this in our lives, but by reading one can only imagine how staggering this challenge must be to those that participate.
